Energy Saving Tips

It is official that Singapore economy is slipping into recession. Our economy has declined for a second straight quarter for the first time in six years.

There is growing concern and fear compounded by the global financial crisis. The recent hike in the utilities bills and increase in SingTel fixed line has not alleviated such fear.

I have chanced across a useful website for energy saving for sharing.

It was reported in Channel NewsAsia this morning:

More Singaporeans expected to seek help for clinical depression, anxiety
By Ting Kheng Siong, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 13 October 2008 0406 hrs

SINGAPORE: The global economy is in a crisis, and psychiatrists say they expect to see more Singaporeans seeking help for clinical depression and anxiety.

Psychiatrists say many people sought such treatment during the Asian Financial crisis, SARS epidemic and after the September 11 attacks in the US.

And it would be no different this time round.

They say men are more likely to face psychological pressures, which they try to overcome by drinking, overworking or self-medicating sleeping pills - thereby worsening the situation.

Many also fear job loss, failed investments and lower property values.

Those suffering from depression or anxiety will be perpetually in low moods and losing sleep, appetite and weight.

Dr Yeo Seem Huat, a psychiatrist, said: "This crisis will affect different levels of people - from housewives to workers to directors of companies. So I think, compared to SARS, September 11, this one is more intense, is more serious." - CNA/de

We need to be aware of relatives, colleagues and friends around us if they suffer from such problem and render moral support where possible. Some times, the cause was their greed that led to over investment and/or invested in high risk funds... Therefore we need to be cautious when we are pestered...

Increase in levies on energy usage or increased price of utilities due to increased oil prices? Just how much can we really save on? It takes conscientious effort to switch off the fans/lights when not in use, use fans as an alternative to air-conditioner, switch off water heaters when not in use, etc. All these helps to conserve energy. Yes. These little actions helps to save our ailing Earth. But aren't there other ways to educate the mass in energy saving other than increasing prices? Put it in a not so nice manner. Its like a penalty to use more electricity. But we do pay for what we use. So why such move?
