Time

"Unlike other resources, time cannot be bought or sold,
borrowed, or stolen, stocked up or saved, manufactured, reproduced, or modified.
All we can do is made use of it. And whether we use it or not, nevertheless slips away."

A Book Review on "Living the Singapore Dream " by Mr Tan Yong Soon

"Living the Singapore Dream " is an extraordinary book, a truly good read for someone who needs inspirational messages.

I suggest that if you have done your Christmas shopping yet, grab one ! I have read twice and I am enjoying every moment.

This book is written by Mr Tan Yong Soon, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources.

I particular impressed by the quote (pg 44 : It makes a difference to be noticed early, as that propels one's career forward. It helps to be at the right place at the right time, but the sure way to get noticed is to do well in whatever task we are assigned. While it is important to have ambitions and dreams, we should not be obsessed with promotion or rewards and honours. Always seek to contribute and add value to the job at hand so as to make a difference. Good work gets noticed. Water will find its level.

It is without doubt an extremely engaging book written with passion !

A Childhood Dream

All alone, up on the hills, lost in faraway thoughts,
of fairies, magic and childhood dreams.
As if magic exists,
Flowers, hazel eyes, she appeared to me.
Something mystical, unspeakable filled my heart,
so natural we were both meant to be.
Fate, I thought was behind this
or perhaps chance had a hand on it.
To bring about a match to move the heavens.
Alas, it was not to be.
Cruelty seems to win the day.
Romeo and Juliet was who we were meant to be
Farewell, my love ... ...
and to what may have been.

- Author, a childhood friend who shares this beautiful poem with me many years ago

Your New Year's Resolution

If you have only three days to live, what would you do ?

Would you treasure each day ever more and live like there is no more tomorrow.

This is the attitude that you should approach live.

Why ?

We waste so much time despairing about the past which are gone and over !

We sometimes worry about the future and about life uncertainties example venturing into the unknown. Since you do not know the eventual outcome, why waste your time to ponder hard on issues that might not happen at all !

Why not ?

Treasure each day and live it to the fullest like there is no tomorrow and waste no time. Take Action NOW !

Make it your New Year's resolution.

You have one life, Live it well !

If you have followed my blog closely, you will realise that I have inserted an additional header posting

"You have one life, Live it well !
一生, 活出精彩 ! "

Many people quoted that " Happier times are often short-lived." but if you do not treasure the day that come by, you have nothing.

You are not poor, if you are not rich,

Most poor people are happy... Do you know why ? Cos each new day, they have a treasure to distribute -" LOVE". If we don't give it, we lose it. If we share it, our Lord multiplies it.

Poor People normally live within their means. They have a passion for life. You have right NOW to treasure. Time cannot halt !

Believe in Yourself

I know you have within you
everything you need,
many special qualities
to help you succeed.
I just wanted you to know
that I believe in you,
and hope that you
will always
believe in yourself too.

Nice Picture - Rain falling onto the Window

Went to visit Parliament House on Wednesday. What a nice experience to ask one of my course mates to capture a nice pic just outside the entrance near to the cafe house... ... It was an unexpected heavy downpour.

My Favourite Poem - Love and Faith

Love and Faith

You are not poor if you
love something, someone,
humanity maybe, and have faith
that you will somewhere,
sometime be satisfied, though you
know not how.

You may even feel that your
sorrow is but a school to teach
you the virtues of sympathy and
gentleness, that will avail
you hereafter, though you know
not where.

I am not always on the highway
that leads to this hilltop,
but I have seen the lighted road
stretching on and on;
sometimes I have even fancies
that I saw the windows of
the castle all aglow.

And I have hastened my steps
to be in time for the feast,
and taken counsel of my courage
lest I falter and fall on the way.

May I keep this vision of
the castle ever before my eyes,
and a disbelief in my heart
that the journey is worthwhile,
and the castle and the glow
in the windows not all illusion.

(From collection of inspirational verses of Max Ehrmann's poems that reveal his love of this world).

The Recent Financial Crisis - How has it affect you ?

It is said that the recent financial crisis is an unprecedented one, both in terms of its scale and the speed with which it unfolded. Its effects have been felt worldwide, hitting all financial sector participants – from banks to insurance companies to mortgage houses.

One of my wife close relatives has been retrenched from DBS. It was a shocking news indeed especially for a big bank like DBS to lay off so many staff from its Singapore and Hongkong branch (as announced in the news last week).

On a lighter note, Commodity prices, like that of oil, have fallen steeply, it has partly signified the global downturn.

Some of the key sources of inflation in the first half of the year, such as food and direct oil-related items such as petrol, electricity tariffs, LPG and gas, have seen slower increases in recent months which may be a good news to some but it will not allay many Singaporean fear of being retrenched or receiving a pay cut.

However, devise a well-planned financial future for you and your family could bring about a brighter hope.

a) Have you set up a monthly budget ?

b) Do you have an emergency fund of at least 6 months of your monthly salary ?

c) When is the last time you have review your financial plan ?

CARPE DIEM

Have you ever heard the phase Carpe diem ?

It is a phrase from a latin poem by Horace. It is popularly translated as "seize the day".

In modern day, very often, you heard people quote that they will make full use of the day which is akin to the phrase Carpe Diem.

If today is your best investment, seize the day today to act as tomorrow has no guarantee. Take Action NOW !

Magical Performance by Liverpool

I am over the moon when I watched the match between Chelsea and Liverpool. My supported team- Liverpool has defied statistics and end Chelsea 87 games unbeaten Home record that has lasted for four years, eight months and six days. All thanks to a scrappy Xabi Alonso deflected shot off the unfortunate Jose Boswinga. Alas ! This is soccer, sometimes, you need a bit of luck to win a game. Liverpool has both luck and guile on their side. Although, they do not have much possession as compared to Chelsea, it was an outstanding and efficient performance by a Liverpool team lacking their star striker Fernando Torres and Martin Skrtel.

Well done Liverpool ! Keep it up and keep on going !

LOVE

It is a mystery why people fall in love... out of love... fall in love again... out of love again.

One may wonder why do people need to go through such experience, is it too tiring ?

I guess you might not have an explanation sometimes. You can analyse the whole day on this mystery and look for reasons and causes; you might not be able to comprehend.

In order to analyse this mystery in depth, one must understand love encompasses many things attached to it, it is more than just mere physical attraction or sums of commonalities that two people share.

Love to me is a gift, a gift to learn, to respect and an experience in life. Love has its own reasons for coming and going.

A reading from the book of Genesis (2:18-24) states that The Lord of God said : " It is not good that the man should be alone. I will make him a helpmate."

From time to time, we need some form an assurance, someone who whispers to us that we are important and feel appreciated.

I like this quote from Bible 1 Cor 13:4:8

Love is always patient and kind;
it is never jealous;
love is never boastful or conceited;
it is never rude or selfish;
it does not take offense,
and is not resentful.

Love takes no pleasure
in other people's sins
but delights in the truth;
it is always ready to excuse,
to trust, to hope, and to endure
whatever comes.

Love does not come to an end.

Life is too short for regret.

Do tell someone you love, how much you love them, especially if you have not said it for years. Renew each day with LOVE.

My Long Time Friend Wayne Koh

Not many people in their lifetime could recall or befriend a friend for more than 25 years. I do have a friend that I can think will last for a lifetime.

I am glad to meet my old friend Wayne Koh today in a seminar. When Wayne introduced someone to me today, I told his friends that I have known Wayne since he was 7-year-old. "That is a very long time ! Wow !"exclaimed one of his friends.

I credited the fact that both of us have made an effort to keep in touch.

He informed me that he has managed to secure a permanent job and I am very happy for him... He is a fighter all his life. He has went through many upheavals in his life. I just wish that his life would be kinder for him. I have always kept him in my prayer.

May The Lord Give Him Peace !

18th October - My Beloved Late Father's Anniversary

Another 18 October has gone by. It was my late father's anniversary. Four years had passed.

My late Father has a deep influence during my adolescent . He taught me the importance of study hard / work hard for everything in life. His only regret was that his family then did not have enough money for him to further his study. He ended up only finishing his Secondary School education.

His death has a deep impact on me till now. I still miss him. His passing has somehow moved me to think, serious thinking on what legacy do I want to leave behind (like what my father has left me ... his virtues of being thrifty and strive hard in life). I do not have the answer now but I will find it someday.... ....

Riding Through the Storm Together... We shall

The meltdown of the mortgage markets was a cause of concern to many. The global financial market crisis has hit many. Recession in Singapore is almost inevitable. With raising costs in electricity, utilities, public transport and Singtel telephone bills.

How things change in a span of just months; it is not so long ago that we heard many make millions through en-bloc sales of their private properties.

Gloomy times is looming ahead and it seem to be the order of the day. Do you have a raincoat or a big enough umbrella to shelter you through the stormy months ahead. Do you have a saving that can last you at else six months ahead in times of raining day ?

I am not the best advocate - teaching people what they should but I have this compelling nature inside me to at least suggest to you reader that there is a need now to devise some well planned strategy ahead.

For example, I used to spend $7 once a week to get my car wash at the petrol kiosk. Not anymore, I only get my car wash once a month now. So I am effectively saving $21 per month. Only on weekend when I am free, I would wash my car (myself).

I often heard people saying that they cannot save. I would advise most to use your notes to pay anything that you purchase and resist the temptation to swipe the credit card. This way, you can budget your pocket better. Also you can save the coins in your little piggy bank. Do not estimate the power of accumulation. You will be surprised over a long haul of period, how much you can really save.

So let us not bask on our past glories, focus on NOW...... I believe that the sun will shine again very soon.

Lesson from Noah's Ark

How often have you seen a rainbow ?

Atmospheric conditions following normally a heavy rain occasionally favour the formation of a rainbow.

Seeing a rainbow nowaday is becoming a rare experience in our hectic schedule. Rainbow is always so unexpected and many of us miss it as we do not often venture out after the rain.

I remember reading an article from a non-friction story about people making rainbows on walls and ceiling and some would make rainbow out from some beveled glass. They will give away the beveled glass with rainbow as a gift hoping to teach unpleasant people to find pleasure in them.

Perhaps We can learn our lesson from Noah's Ark and I particularly like the pointer no 11,mention about Rainbow.

1.Don't miss the boat.
2.Remember that we are all in the same boat.
3.Plan ahead. It wasn't raining when Noah built the Ark.
4.Stay fit When you're 600 years old, someone may ask you to do something really big.
5.Don't listen to critics; just get on with the job that needs to be done.
6.Build your future on high ground!
7.For safety's sake, travel in pairs.
8.Speed isn't always an advantage. The snails were on board with the cheetahs.
9.When you're stressed, float a while.
10.Remember, the Ark was built by amateurs; the Titanic by professionals.
11.No matter the storm, when you are with God, there's always a rainbow waiting.

Energy Saving Tips

It is official that Singapore economy is slipping into recession. Our economy has declined for a second straight quarter for the first time in six years.

There is growing concern and fear compounded by the global financial crisis. The recent hike in the utilities bills and increase in SingTel fixed line has not alleviated such fear.

I have chanced across a useful website for energy saving for sharing.

Mr Tan Kin Lian

Recently learnt from my close friend that former NTUC Income Chief Mr Tan Kin Lian who retired on 28 February 2007 has one of the most impressive hit on the number of visitors visiting his blog at http://tankinlian.blogspot.com/. He has amassed an amazing 495,430 plus visitors and still counting. One has to log in and read his article to know why...

Today is your best Investment... Take Action Now !

According to Lexean magazine Issue no 13 , 2008, it stated that " As of June 2008, global food prices have risen 83% in the last 3 years." With the recent increase in the electricity tariff and public transport cost, what is next to come .... ? Are we prepare to cushion for such increase in price hike. Coupled with the global financial market crisis, is hard times ahead of us... So what would you do ? Do we just rest on our laurels and despair and do nothing.

If today is your best investment, you should grab the chance and seize the opportunity to continue to work hard. Be more sensible in making decisions so that you make every cent counts and stretch the value of your $. Also discern on your "needs" and "wants" example what is necessity or luxury items. Be sure to keep a saving bank and save up your coins and spare dollars for rainy days.

Saving needs lot of discipline. One should not splurge on big items tickets and instead to learn ways to tighten on spending. Postpone consumption is a sure way to force one to save. It is often easier say than done.

Having the right attitude is everything

I told my new staff today inside my car as I was driving.

I said to him "there is one thing that your dad and mum cannot teach you... do you know what is it ?". He shook his head. I told him "that is having the right attitude always be it in workplace or studying for an examination.

I coined to him that you could have the best ingredients to cook a dish to your girlfriend, the best tips from a master chef and the most fresh seafood, you could still fail if you do not have the right attitude to do it. I further illustrated that supposed three men were given the same kind of ingredients, same instructions on how to cook and coached by the same chef; somehow the end product will be different. The rationale behind one should question is whether all three men did put their heart and soul into cooking the prescribed dish or not. Henceforth, I highlighted to him that having the right attitude is everything whether you put all your heart and soul working on it, the end product can tell a story.

Prayer on "The Power of your Subconscious Mind"

I have chanced across one powerful prayer taken from " The power of your subconscious mind" by Dr Joseph Murphy. This prayer is to be recited before one goes to sleep or when awakes in the morning for healing of the physical body.

"My body and all its organs were created by the infinite intelligence in my sub-conscious mind. It knows how to heal me. Its wisdom fashioned all my organs, tissues, muscles and bones. This infinite healing presence within me is now transforming every atom of my being making me whole and perfect now. I give thanks for the healing I know is taking place now. Wonderful ave the works of the creative intelligence within me."

It is a strong affirmative prayer. Try it.

Being Clinical and Assertive in Work

I told my teammate, Shah about what I think of being"clinical" in everything that we do; be it at work or in front of goal last Friday.

Shah nodded his head and agreed tacitly as I was droving to our training pitch for a street soccer game.

After the game, I was given the rave as " Man of the Match" for being scoring the most number of goals (in double digit) in the game and for a truly outstanding performance. I was a little surprised about my performance that day as I am often utilised as a defender to stop goal instead of scoring goal. I rarely have the occasion to show my shooting prowess in front of goal.

On the way back, I shared with Shah that both " Clinical" and "Assertive" are different words but they have a common meaning to me as it expressed the term "oozing with confidence". When I highlighted the word "Assertive" to Shah, I explained that knowing decisively what to do next in a split second whether to shoot left or right corner to score a goal is important.

I shared that being "clinical" and "assertive" in my work have helped me to inspire my fellow subordinates to work better and more efficient towards the congruent of the organisational goal. It has helped to make fast decision and cut down time wastage.

Lastly, I opined to Shah that although "clinical" and "assertive" are important in my area of work, not running into being hubris is equally important. One must possesses an openness mind to accept criticism.

What do you do when things seem to always go against you ?

What do you do when you challenge life, life always wins ?

Would you be despair and begin to give up hope easily... ...

Think about it. Life is too short for any regret or despair. This is a tell sign that you need to change your attitude or ways of doing things or change an old habit.

Slowly and surely, after you have changed your attitude, ways of conducting business or change an old habit. Things seem to change. Life suddenly begins to support you. It is too similar to an old saying " In every obstacle, there lies an opportunity." An opportunity that arrives disguised as an obstacle or a disaster often bind us to see the truth. It is all about your attitude. How you handle life is what you make out what life will bring to you.

So always start today with a positive mindset. I always say the following phrase to myself and it has kept me going through the years :

Problems are only challenges;
Obstacles are only lessons in life;
Impossibles are only imitation.

Begin take charge of your life NOW !

Adieu Honourable Maharishi Mahesh Yogi

Have you heard of a guru, tycoon, much sought after teacher, the late seer Maharishi Mahesh Yogi who died on 5th February this year.

In my opinion,he is not just one of the most poignant figures but one that has made an impact and is an influential man of the century.

His teaching has been simple : to end poverty and teach people how to discover personal fulfilment.

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's first global tour began in 1958, from which time, his techniques and programs have been taught worldwide. He became famous (real fame) in the Western world in part due to interactions with The Beatles and other celebrities. Many at that times, are ready to step forward to get a dose of spiritual bliss though not all were celebrities.

According to The Economist (Feb 16th 2008) issue, all in all, some 5 million people are said to have been taught the maharishi's techniques since 1955. Disciplines paid US$2,500 for a five-day course, learning how to reach a " deeper level " of consciousness by inwardly repeating a mantra twice a day for 20 minutes.

Great Seer Maharishi is a true phenomenon.

5 Ways to Save your Car Petrol

Here are some good ways to save petrol :

1) Always plan your route before you set off;

2) Change your driving habit (example do not step too hard or too often on the accelerator);

3) Do not drive with full load of items inside your car. Travel light;

4) Do not drive with full tank of petrol; and

5) Cut down the warm up duration before you set off example from 10 minutes to 5 minutes.

Windows to your Soul

Your eyes may be the windows to your soul but they're also your main doorway to the world around you.

It is amazing as we awoke each day, we are able to see God wondrous creation in front of us. The field on the grass is still as green as ever yet nobody tender to it.

I am always thankful for each day... a new beginning and a new start of the day.

The poem from Ralph Waldo Trine has always enliven me :

Let there be many windows in your soul
That all the glory of the universe
May beautiful it. Not the narrow pane
Of one poor creed can catch the radiant rays
That shine from countless sources. Tear away
That blinds of superstition; let the light
Pour through fair windows broad as truth itself
And high as Heaven.
Why should the spirit peer
Through some priest-curtained office, and
grope
Along dim corridors of doubt, when all
The splendour from unfathomed seas of
space
Might bathe it with their golden seas of love ?
Sweep up the debris of decaying faiths,
Sweep down the cobwebs of worn-out beliefs,
And throw your soul wide open to the light
Of reason and of knowledge. Tune your ear
To all the wordless music of the stars,

And to the voice of nature, and your heart
Shall turn to truth and goodness, as the plant
Turns to the sun. A thousand unseen hands
Reach down to help you from their peace-crowned heights,
And all the forces of the firmament
Shall fortify your strength. Be not afraid
To thrust aside half-truths and grasp the whole.

Sharing on Saint Teresa of Avila

Saint Teresa of Avila was a prominent Spanish mystic, a Carmelite nun, a writer of Counter Reformation. She was a reformer of the Carmelite Order. She was born on 1515 and died on 1582.

I like two of her famous quotes and would like to share:

" Prayer is an act of love, words are not needed. Even if sickness distracts from thoughts, all that is needed is the will to love."

" Prayer is the Surge of the heart:

it is a simple look turned around Heaven,

it is a cry of recognition and of love, embracing both trial and joy."

- Saint Teresa of Avila (1515 - 1582)

About Passion

One junior staff from another department has asked me how I find the energy to carry on my job as I have slowly approaching towards my eighth year with the organisation.

I shared that one needs to have the passion and must love what he / she is doing.

I have always like to read Khalil Gibran's book and I remembered this from one of his books :

Your reason and your passion are the rudder and the sails of your seafaring soul.

If either your sails or your rudder be broken, you can but toss and drift, or else be held at a standstill in mid-seas.

For reason, ruling alone, is a force confining; and passion,
unattended, is a flame that burns to its own destruction.

Therefore let your soul exalt your reason to the height of passion, that it may sing;

And let it direct your passion with reason, that your passion may live through its own daily resurrection, and like the phoenix rise above its own ashes.

New Opportunity Awaits... ...

Recently a staff told me that he wanted to leave and is seeking a transfer to another department. I talked to him and understand from him the background for such a transfer is due to his poor health and stress with coping the demanding deadlines.

I shared this with a old friend. She shared candidly that sometimes, when the door closes, another door will open and she asked me to see this as a new opportunity to introduce new staff within my department that may bring about a new energy and freshness to the existing team that I have.

What she has said has made me reflect and it does make sense to me. I once chanced across a famous quote from Eileen Caddy (for sharing) :"When one door closes another opens. Expect that new door to reveal even greater wonders and glories and surprises. Feel yourself grow with every experience. And look for the reason for it."

A different presentation and perception

I was on course over the weekend.

An interesting sharing by one of the participants called Joe. He shared that during his pastimes, he likes to hand out with his friends and enjoy a game of tennis at his friend condo.

He further shared that although he is a very good tennis player. He likes to try his hand one day into coaching. Some of the participants give a puzzling look. (Not a good tennis player, yet wanna to coach ?) When prompted further, he explained that he thought he has good fundamentals that he is able to impart to yound kids. Some nodded but some did not understand or make up what he is trying to say.

I understand instantly what he is trying to convey without passing any judgement. It is just a different way of presentation resulting in a different perception. Imagine that Roger Federer's coach cannot be as good as him else Federer's Coach will be playing in the Tournament instead of Federer.

In retrospect, perhaps Joe is just modest by stating that he is not a good tennis player.

Defining Moment

I am glad to be informed that I am the recipient of this year's Volunteer Long Service Service Award (5 Years).

How time flies! I have journeyed through with MCYS as a volunteer for 5 years. I remembered the time that I have to juggle work and volunteer work. Really not easy. The award will serve as a testimony to me for the time and energy that I have put in to the support the work of the Ministry.

I would like to attribute the award to my wife for her understanding and support rendered. I am asking her to attend the Volunteer Appreciation function with me.

On Freedom of Speech

I went to visit Mother-in-law yesterday to spend some time with her.

My Father-in-law happended to be back from his tennis coaching lesson. He shared with me that freedom of speech be it spoken or in blogging has to come with a price and that is responsibility. He further explained that the onus is on the person who disseminate this information. As this could be a dicey topic for me to deal with, I nodded my head but commented nothing.

About Myself

Life is like a concert, is made of high and low notes, of pauses in the elation and of peaks of reverberating, deafening heartbreaks.

Looking at it, life is too short to learn and re-learn many issues in life. Life is so short for us to regret at certain decisions we made in our life... ... so makes the most of it. Live it ...you have one life.

My purpose of writing in this blog is to give some inspirational insights that I have experienced and to share with those like-minded people out there like you. I hope that you will find my blog just as inspirational as I have enjoyed blogging.
